Bucket List Wish: Christmas in France

Why I’m Spending Christmas in France This Year

Ever since I first learned about global warming back in 2008, one of my biggest fears was that I’d never get to experience a truly icy, magical winter in Europe. The thought of snow-covered towns, glowing lights, and that crisp winter air has been sitting on my bucket list for years.

This year, I’m finally doing it. I’m spending Christmas in France.

Why France?

France is the third largest country in Europe and offers a wide variety of landscapes—snowy mountains, vibrant cities, peaceful countryside, and charming coastal towns. That means you can experience completely different versions of Christmas, all within one country.

If you’ve ever dreamed of skating in front of historic landmarks, sipping mulled wine at a festive market, or skiing in the Alps, France can give you all of that—and more.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can experience during winter in France:

Paris – Classic and Festive

  • Ice Skating: Outdoor rinks pop up in beautiful spots like in front of the Hôtel de Ville.

  • Christmas Lights: Walk down the Champs-Élysées and other neighborhoods lit up in full holiday sparkle.

  • Moulin Rouge: Enjoy a festive dinner show for a glamorous Parisian night out.

  • Eiffel Tower: Visit the tower for city views and a magical holiday atmosphere.

  • Disneyland Paris: Perfect for families or anyone who wants to feel like a kid again during the season.

Strasbourg – The Christmas Market Experience

Strasbourg is located near the German border, and its culture reflects that beautifully. The city is known for having one of the oldest and most magical Christmas markets in Europe. Think warm drinks, handmade gifts, and fairy-tale vibes.

Lyon – Festival of Lights

Every December, Lyon hosts the Fête des Lumières, a four-day celebration featuring light displays, art installations, and performances all across the city. It’s a unique holiday experience that’s not just beautiful—it’s unforgettable.

Loire Valley – Holiday Magic in Castles

The châteaux of the Loire Valley are already impressive, but during the holidays, they are decorated with lights, trees, and seasonal displays. Some offer special winter tours or festive events that feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.

The French Alps – Ski and Snow

Having Fondue with my son, Chamonix, France 2024

If you're dreaming of a white Christmas, this is where you'll find it. Ski resorts like Chamonix, Val d'Isère, and Courchevel offer snow sports, cozy mountain villages, and postcard-perfect scenery.

The Pyrenees – Hot Thermal Baths in the Snow

Tucked between France and Spain, the Pyrenees offer a peaceful winter escape. Picture this: soaking in warm, natural thermal baths surrounded by snow-covered mountains. The region is known for its scenic spa towns, like Cauterets and Ax-les-Thermes, where you can relax in steamy outdoor pools while breathing in crisp mountain air. It’s a quiet, restorative way to experience winter—perfect for slowing down and reconnecting.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of magical places to spend Christmas in France. And this is just the beginning.

If you're curious about what a trip like this could look like for you, or want help planning the perfect holiday itinerary, I’d love to help.

Stay tuned for my next post where I’ll explore the different holiday foods and winter treats from across France.
